The Yamaha AvantGrand N1x is a true hybrid piano which brings together the authentic touch of a grand piano keyboard along with the convenient features of a digital piano. No tuning required - and you can plug in headphones for silent practice without disturbing others in the household!

Real Acoustic Grand Piano Action

The N1x is equipped with a true grand piano action featuring the complete mechanism - long wooden keys, balance pins, hammers, whippen, jack etc. The only difference is there are no strings - the sound is produced using cutting edge digital sampling techniques, and replayed through a very high-quality amplification system which immerses the player in sound.

This collaboration of technologies ensures the expression of the performer is translated to the instrument just like an acoustic piano. The experience is just like that of playing a concert grand piano. The keyboard action of the N1x is extremely fast and note repetition is much higher than that of upright pianos and traditional digital pianos - this is because grand piano actions use gravity to return to their original position and key repetition is up to two-times faster than that of an upright piano.

The N1x gives a grand piano playing experience in an instrument which is no larger than a standard Yamaha U1 upright piano.

Thanks to our advanced binaural sampling* technology, the sound you hear through your headphones is remarkably lifelike. Treating the soundboard not simply as a point source of sound but as a plane, Yamaha took recordings at four positions, adding optimum centre and rear locations to the traditional left and right. Meanwhile, the AvantGrand speaker system has been designed to ensure that this sound is heard best at the playing position. A three-way system featuring woofer, mid -range and tweeter speakers precisely reproduce the rich natural resonance of the soundboard. Even more, each of the low-, mid-, and high-frequency bands has been given its own amplifier to prevent interference between bands.

Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM)

In a grand piano, strings and sounds resonate throughout the entire body of the instrument producing a rich reverberation that envelops the listener in sound. Not only are the strings you are playing vibrating , but other strings ring as a reaction to ones you play . This is one reason the piano sound is so complex and rich.

This phenomena is reproduced perfectly in the AvantGrand N1X through Virtual Resonance Modeling {VRM) which calculates the various states of the strings for each of the 88 notes on the keyboard from one instant to the next. As a result, the N1X reflects the limitless number of factors inherent in playing an acoustic piano such as which keys are pressed , the strength with which the keys are played and pedal timing.
