Way Huge Smalls Blue Hippo Analog Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal

Water, Water Everywhere

The Blue Hippo from Way Huge is a staggeringly well-formed chorus/vibe pedal. It manages to toe the line perfectly between vintage sensibilities, modern possibilities and functionality, creative delvings, and functional tinting. The power to tailor the amount of watery fury it unleashes upon your tone is left at your fingertips through the use of its ridiculously simple controls. It’s an all-round killer chorus that’s a no-brainer to use.

All Together Now!

Chorus is the name of the game with the Blue Hippo. This particular chorus is fully analog which really helps to steep the tone in dark, full character and lush, unctuous depth. It’s a really musical chorus which widens and enhances your tone with ease. One of the benefits of analog circuitry is the added personality it imbues into the pedal. Digital circuitry provides precision, brightness, and predictability whereas analog circuitry tends to lean towards the organic. It seems to be darker, more complex and richer.

You can dial in a light amount which will shimmer and cause your notes to dance, or you give it the beans and swamp your tone in movement. Wherever you end up settling, the chorus provides the goods. It stays thick, rich, and liquid.

Vibe

One of the coolest features of the Blue Hippo is the mini switch between the two control knobs. This allows you to switch from “chorus” over to “vibe”. Once this switch is engaged a vibrato effect enters the equation. This adds to the chorus effect to really kick things up a gear. It is inspired by the Univibe effect made famous by one Mr Hendrix. It was originally formulated to emulate the sound of a rotary speaker. This vibe mode expands the pedal out to another dimension and provides a whole other slew of tonal possibilities. The same analog focus is present in this mode and keeps the character of the pedal intact with all its oscillating, characterful goodness.

Making a Hippo Small

This Blue Hippo Mk.III is part of Way Huge’s new Smalls collection. This is a line which takes a lot of classic Way Huge pedals and puts them in a much smaller enclosure. This allows them to fit on a far wider array of pedal boards whilst still fully retaining the original pedals character and functionality.
